Little Italy is certainly the most famous Italian neighborhood
in the United States. Located in Lower Manhattan, it borders Soho
and Chinatown, which have absorbed most of Little Italy.
Italian immigrants, who arrived with the large migrations from
Italy at the end of the 1800’s, settled in and dominated
an area which was named Little Italy. From the mid 1900’s
Italian-Americans began to move to outer boroughs such as Brooklyn
and the size of the neighborhood slowly shrank.
There are very few Italians living in Little Italy today. Mulberry
Street is what’s left of this neighborhood, where there
are still several Italian commercial establishments, such as some
very good restaurants.
