Times Square’s big illuminated signs, lights, and jumbotrons
define this intersection at the junction of Broadway and 7th Avenue.
Although it is not one of the biggest squares in the world, it
is recognized worldwide as a symbol of New York City.
The square is named after the famous newspaper, the New York
Times, which moved its headquarters in the 1970’s. The area
was restored after the 1990’s by the mayor of that decade,
creating a luxury neighborhood.
New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square, where thousands
of people gather to ring in the New Year, are famous worldwide.
Times Square offers an array of stores open late at night and
some of the most famous Broadway theatres.
The portion of Broadway between 42nd and 47th street is closed
to traffic, making a part of Times Square accessible only to pedestrians.
