Quando falamos do East Village, não podemos deixar de voltar aos anos 60, o movimento hippie, Andy Warhol com o famoso show multimídia "The Exploding Plastic Inevitable" e toda a contra-cultura americana daqueles anos. A artéria principal e mais movimentada continua sendo a Praça de São Marcos, com muitas lojas e bares. O East Village é considerado um dos últimos bairros "boêmios" / "alternativos" ainda vivos em Manhattan, oferecendo uma mistura de vibrações descontraídas, descoladas e dos anos 60.
O East Village também é lembrado como Klein Deutschland ("Pequena Alemanha"), pois esta foi a área onde a maioria dos imigrantes alemães se estabeleceram após sua chegada no final dos anos 1800 e no início dos anos 1900. Bem como a Judiaria Rialto (2ª Avenida acima da 10ª Rua) e a Pequena Ucrânia. Se você prestar atenção, verá que alguns prédios ainda têm nomes ucranianos em suas fachadas.
