The history of New York’s public transportation is also a story of how riders pay their fare. Over the decades, entering the subway has meant different things: metal tokens, the iconic MetroCard, and now fully digital, contactless payments. Each transition reflects not only technological progress, but also the evolving rhythm of the city itself.
After more than 30 years of service, the MetroCard is officially approaching the end of its journey. The MTA has confirmed that December 31, 2025 will be the final day to purchase or refill a MetroCard. From that point on, New York’s transit system will rely entirely on OMNY and tap-and-go fares.
Before the 1990s, New Yorkers paid their subway rides with small metal tokens, inserted into turnstiles. These tokens changed design over time and became beloved urban symbols. In 1994, the MetroCard replaced them, introducing magnetic-strip technology, unlimited passes, and a more flexible fare system.
New York City subway tokens were used from 1953 until 2003. Today, many New Yorkers still keep them as souvenirs, and they are often sold as collectible items in vintage shops and museums.
The familiar swipe of the MetroCard — sometimes successful, sometimes not — became a daily ritual for commuters and visitors alike.
More than just a payment method, the MetroCard became part of New York’s identity, featuring special editions, cultural campaigns, and iconic slogans. Its retirement marks the end of a recognizable chapter in the city’s transit history.
OMNY (One Metro New York) allows riders to pay simply by tapping:
OMNY automatically applies fare capping, ensuring riders never pay more than the weekly unlimited equivalent when using the same payment method.
MetroCards will no longer be sold or refilled after December 31, 2025, but existing cards will remain valid during a transition period in 2026.
For visitors, tap-and-go is the easiest way to get around. OMNY is fast, intuitive, and ideal for short stays.
