Climb aboard the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier to visit the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. A museum that fascinates everyone -- adults and children alike. The aircraft carrier Intrepid is a national historical monument and during your visit, you will have the chance to see original artifacts, view historical footage, and videos and learn more about this impressive Aircraft Carrier and its history.
Since 2013, the aircraft carrier has also been the home to the Enterprise Space Shuttle, the NASA prototype that paved the way to the Space Shuttle program. It was 2012 when the Shuttle arrived at JFK airport and from there it was transferred to a barge for a journey that lasted several days, first to New Jersey, and then sailing up the Hudson River, passing in front of the Statue of Liberty to finally reach the Intrepid. On July 19th, the Space Shuttle Pavilion, with the Enterprise, opened to the public with events that lasted five days and with the participation of many important astronauts. Unfortunately, when Hurricane Sandy hit the area on October 29th, 2012, the Space Shuttle pavilion was damaged but reopened in July 2013.
During the visit, you will be able to board the USS Growler submarine and the Concorde Alpha Delta G-BOAD (in 1976, it took 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 59 seconds to cross the ocean). You will visit the flight deck to see more than two dozen planes, all beautifully restored, you will enter the hangar to follow 2 routes, one that will take you to explore the technology of the Intrepid, the second dedicated to the people who have lived and worked on the ship from 1943 to today.
Includes Space Shuttle Pavilion, submarine Growler and all temporary exhibitions
